Spokane, Washington. Artists in Washington’s second-city have long sought to carve out a space in the shadow of the legendary scenes on the west side of the state. The Lilac City is often an afterthought to the many touring bands passing through the PNW…and to the trendsetters along the coast, Spokane is a far-off backwoods outpost that might as well be in the Midwest. Yet, the city’s blue collar underdog vibe has been evident in its outsider scene that has ebbed and flowed throughout the past five decades of American underground music. It’s the type of town where, given the right conditions, folks can come together to create a special community centered on music, art, and progressive DIY ethics.
Spokane is currently home to a burgeoning all-ages scene that has steadily expanded in the years following the pandemic that decimated indie spaces across the country. Centered around long-running venues like the Big Dipper and Neato Burrito, and complimented by garages, basements, and backyards, a literal all-ages, multigenerational DIY punk community has picked up steam in recent years.
Beneath The Falls: A Spokane DIY Sampler collects a cross-section of the current Lilac City scene. Inspired by regional compilations that have become legendary in the American underground, Beneath The Falls is both a celebration of the friendship and camaraderie forged in a fly-over scene, and an unveiling to the underground community at large. At its core, the LP is a small “p” punk compilation featuring a range of sonic styles, all united by DIY ethics and outsider approach. Although the sounds are diverse, the tracks flow seamlessly, complimenting one another from start to finish. It’s not hard to hear an emerging Spokane sound, if not at least a general vibe. While not an exhaustive list of all the great bands calling Spokane home, Beneath The Falls highlights a wide swath of the east side community. Long-time scene veterans Belt Of Vapor, Loomer, Blunt Skulls, Jangled Nerves, and Ben Jennings are joined by up-and-comers Hayes Noble, Hell Motel, Dairybaby, Jumbotron, and Bad Trip Motel. Taken together, the comp features artists who played their first shows across four decades - from the 1990s to the 2020s! It’s truly a testament to the power of all-ages DIY punk.
Released by Spokane-based label Two Two One Press, Beneath The Falls was compiled by the husband and wife team of Brett and Rose Noble. Brett Noble explains, “while we are recent transplants to Spokane, we came up in similar scenes outside the major cities of the Midwest. We immediately recognized that same feel that attracted us to the punk community as kids back in the 90s. Rose adds “there’s a lot of mixed-bills and a tight-knit and growing community of artists that support one another’s endeavors. It’s great to go to shows and see a range of bands, kids taking photos, others making videos, interviewing each other - a scene of participants.” According to Brett “there’s a throwback feel and it speaks to the times - people want to create and escape their screens and take on an increasingly autocratic world. There’s wonderful things happening here and in towns all over the country. We wanted to help capture what’s going on in our backyard and share it with people on the outside. He continues, “underground music scenes and art communities are massively important in mid-sized cities and fly over communities. They bring people together and give folks the skills and confidence to create and organize. People bond over music, see and hear different perspectives, and ultimately see that they have the ability to shape the space they want to exist in. Now, more than ever, we need those communities and spaces to connect and organize. One of our major goals with the label and the shows we do is to help facilitate that.”
Just as it’s important for people to come together to create, it’s equally important for these transmissions to connect scenes across the country. There’s a lot to appreciate coming out of places outside the major population centers, and it should comfort all of us to know people are putting their heads down, coming together, and making things happen. Beneath The Falls seeks to share that piece of Spokane with the world.

Bad Trip Motel
Bad Trip Motel is an emerging indie emo fuzz passion project running off the hearts of Mason Bytnar (bass), Parker Bytnar (drums), and Tristin Fogle (guitar & vocals). Characterized by their love for rhythmic bass lines, chiming guitar riffs, and driving drum beats, Bad Trip Motel is where heartfelt and honest songwriting meets electrifying and unrelenting instrumentals.
Belt of Vapor
Belt Of Vapor is a heavy, atmospheric rock trio from the Pacific Northwest blending raw emotion, melodic tension, and dynamic intensity. Formed by Aaron Powell (bass, vocals), Justin Walter (drums), and Bob Homburg (guitar), the band crafts a sound that moves between sludgy riffs, post-rock textures, and driving rhythms — equal parts power and introspection. Their music channels the misty mood of the region they call home, pairing haunting vocals with walls of tone and rhythm that surge like a storm. With each performance, Belt Of Vapor brings a visceral energy that’s both cathartic and immersive, cementing their place in the Northwest’s underground rock landscape.
Jangled Nerves
After years of chasing hooks and melodies together and solo in various incarnations, guitarists/vocalists Aaron Rock, Joe Jacobs, and bassist Jack Patten joined forces with veteran drummer Joel May in 2024 as Jangled Nerves. The Spokane alternative band is currently recording for a tape set to release in early 2026, with more shows on the horizon.
Jumbotron
Jumbotron was formed in Spokane, WA in December of 2024 and consists of Dylan Stout (vocals and guitar), Micah Thompson (guitar), Grayson Abrahamson (bass), and Evan Samuels (drums). Jumbotron’s music is made to feel like a memory that you can’t forget; some fever dream where you’re in the early 2000s and Kevin Shields decided to ditch the reverse reverb and team up with Paul Banks to make really loud pop music.
Ben Jennings
Ben Jennings cut his teeth in the swamps of south east Texas, trading the heat and humidity for what any self respecting Texan would call a frozen hellscape 13 years ago to hone his idiosyncratic rock n roll between the Cascades and Rockies. Former member of now defunct bands including Normal Babies, Ouija Bored, Mirror Mirror, Pit, and Outercourse; Ben is currently the sole perpetual member of Dream Rotation, playing with anyone (or no one) he see’s fit.
Hayes Noble
Hayes Noble crafts a distinctive blend of shoegaze punk and noise-pop, mixing fuzzed-out guitars with heartfelt songwriting. Rooted in the DIY spirit, his music channels the restless energy of small-town America through layers of distortion and melody. After releasing LPs Head Cleaner (2023) and As It Was, As We Were (2024) Noble recently dropped Never Blue in October. Recorded solo in his Spokane basement, Noble strips back his trademark wall of sound to reveal a more intimate, reflective side, balancing grit and warmth. Drawing comparisons to Dinosaur Jr., Built to Spill, and Hüsker Dü, Noble stands out as a leading voice in a new generation of guitar-driven indie rockers.
Dairybaby
Spokane Washington’s Dairybaby is the newest project from teenage multi-instrumentalist Everett Noble. Drawing inspiration from Cap’n Jazz, Alex G, and Title Fight, Dairybaby combines glittering lo-fi guitar with the more bombastic elements of classic emo hardcore. Sometimes solo, sometimes a full band, Dairybaby has quickly emerged as a fan favorite in the Spokane all-ages DIY community. Since 2022, Everett has been touring and recording with older brother Hayes, playing hundreds of shows across 25 states on multiple tours. Now 17, Noble is setting his own course, prepping Dairybaby’s debut LP set to release in 2026.
Hell Motel
Spokane emotional hardcore band Hell Motel formed in 2022. Initially a two-piece consisting of Joey Benson (guitar/vocals) and Evan Samuels (drums), they were eventually joined by Micah Reyes (bass) shortly after releasing their debut album, No Vacancy, in 2024. Now split between Los Angeles and Spokane, Hell Motel has a new EP on the way in late 2025.
Loomer
Spokane indie-punk stalwarts Loomer first came together in 2013, uniting guitarist/vocalist Jordan Satterfield, bassist Josh Morrisey, and drummer Tony Kuchar. The trio quickly made their mark with two raw, hook-heavy EPs released in 2014 and 2015. After Kuchar’s move out of town, Loomer released one final single in 2016 before shuttering the project. In 2023, with Kuchar back in Spokane, Loomer roared back to life—instantly reconnecting with old fans and winning over a new generation of Spokane punks. Beyond Loomer, the members stay deeply embedded in the city’s music scene: Satterfield, Morrisey, and Kuchar also power the post-hardcore force Puddy Knife, while Morrisey holds down bass duties in Big Raffle.
Blunt Skulls
An alliance was created by three Blunt Skulls in a dark underground cavern in the year 2023. The trio craft their songs as a means of cathartic release to expel demons and summon hope on their journey of self-discovery through sound. Their live performances create a lasting impact on the rabble of Spokane, WA.
